Ancient Katzrin
Reveal the Mysteries of the Past

A Holy Land experience that emphasizes the land and its bounty set in an archeological excavation above the Sea of the Galilee

Ancient Katzrin
Secrets of the Past
Come discover an authentic Jewish village with its own synagogue, private homes, village spring, and farming tools. This is not a replica of an ancient village; it's the actual village itself, excavated and reconstructed by archaeologists. A visit to Katzrin will bring your understanding of the Bible to new levels!
A complementary visit to the nearby Golan Archeological Museum is recommended

Golan Archeological Museum - Combine a visit to the Park with a visit to the museum displaying rare local artifacts and an audiovisual presentation devoted to the history of Gamla. A discount combination ticket may be purchased at the ticket booth.

Dress Up...Spiritually
Dress up in ancient clothing, grind mustard seeds, crush olives into olive oil, stomp on grapes and make wine, visit the threshing floor, pray in the excavated 1500 year-old synagogue, walk into an ancient home. Meet the ancient "residents" of Katzrin in a dramatic or musical setting, and see an audio-visual presentation on how the ancient sages debated, while sitting comfortably in a specially-designed House of Study with six screens, painted walls, and a mosaic floor

Grain, Wine and Oil: DIY
The Biblical landscape of Israel was dominated by three crops: wheat, grapes and olives.
As we read in the Bible: "And I will give you rain for your land in its time, the first rain and the last rain, and you will harvest your grain, your wine, and your oil" (Deuteronomy 11:14). Many Biblical stories and parables deal with these three staples. Perhaps you have read about them countless times. But have you ever *produced* them? Here at Ancient Katzrin, we invite you to take part in these seasonal agricultural activities. Your hands will do the physical work; your soul might feel the spiritual side. Farming, after all, is a partnership between humans and God.

The Grain (May-June)
The wheat harvest begins in early summer. We might have "sowed in tears", but now we will "reap in joy" (Psalm 126). True, it's more convenient to buy bread at a bakery; but by producing it yourself, you can appreciate all the work that goes into making it: sowing, reaping, threshing, grinding, kneading, baking. Like Boaz and Ruth, we will go to the threshing floor at the time of the wheat harvest to experience the Biblical labors involved in the production of bread.

The Wine (August-October)
The grape harvest in August was a time of song and dance and joy. We invite you to tread barefoot on grapes in our reconstructed winepress; the basic technique has remained unchanged for thousands of years. Take home you own bottle of fresh organic grape juice, including equipment for those who want to turn the juice into wine.

The Oil (October-December)
During the olive picking season, you can make olive oil in our reconstructed olive press, using original tools made from the local basalt rock. We will crush the olives by stone, and load the baskets into the press. Olive oil was a main source of light in ancient times, and has deep spiritual significance (i.e. Zacharia, Chapter 4), but we will also learn about the many other possible uses of this rich liquid. Make your own olive oil in the Holy Land!

Group Snacks - the Ancient Way
Treat your group to a Biblical-style snack. Imagine sitting down in our courtyard and smelling the aroma of freshly-baked pita bread. Take some olive oil, hyssop spice, goat cheese, olives, and jam from the earthenware pots, and fill your pita like the ancients did in this very spot thousands of years ago. Enjoy the timeless flavor of locally-produced food, as you sit back and relax at a table in the olive grove, with a wicker basket full of hot, savory surprises
